> Use STEP to send an accurate 3D model to a manufacturer or machine shop, STL or 3MF for 3D printing, DWG for editable 2D drawings in AutoCAD, and DXF for laser cutting and CNC profiles. dijitul creates and converts CAD files in all of these formats at £45 an hour + VAT, with fixed quotes for clear jobs.

## Key facts

- STEP (ISO 10303) is the standard neutral format for exact 3D solid models
- STL describes a surface as triangles, with no units, colour or design history
- DWG is AutoCAD's native drawing format; DXF is the open exchange version
- Laser cutters, plasma tables and CNC routers usually want DXF
- Machine shops and injection moulders usually want STEP plus a PDF drawing
- You cannot reliably turn an STL back into an editable solid without remodelling

## The short answer

| Format | What it is | Send it to |

| STEP (.step, .stp) | Exact 3D solid geometry, neutral format | Machine shops, mould makers, other CAD users |
| STL (.stl) | Triangle mesh of a surface | 3D printers and print bureaus |
| 3MF (.3mf) | Modern mesh format with units and colour | 3D printers that support it |
| DWG (.dwg) | AutoCAD native 2D or 3D drawing | Architects, engineers, AutoCAD users |
| DXF (.dxf) | Open 2D exchange format | Laser cutters, plasma, waterjet, CNC routers |
| PDF | Dimensioned drawing for people | Quoting, inspection and sign-off |
| OBJ (.obj) | Mesh with textures | Rendering and visualisation |

## STEP: the format manufacturers trust

STEP is defined by the international standard ISO 10303. It stores the exact mathematical shape of a solid: true circles, accurate curves and precise faces. Almost every professional CAD system, including SolidWorks, Fusion, Inventor, Creo and Siemens NX, can open and export it. That makes STEP the safest way to hand a 3D part to a machine shop for CNC machining, to a toolmaker for an injection mould, or to another engineer.

STEP does not usually keep the feature history of the original model, so the receiver gets a dumb solid they can measure and machine from but not easily re-edit parametrically. Always keep your native files as well. Pair a STEP file with a dimensioned PDF drawing showing tolerances, material and finish; the model shows shape, the drawing shows intent.

## STL: for 3D printing only

STL approximates the surface of a part with thousands of small triangles. It is simple, which is why nearly every 3D printer slicer accepts it. But it has big limits: no units (a part can arrive 25.4 times too big or too small if inches and millimetres are confused), no colour or material, and curves are only as smooth as the triangle count allows.

STL is a poor format for manufacturing other than 3D printing, and it is hard to edit. Converting an STL back into a clean, editable solid usually means remodelling the part. 3MF is a newer alternative that keeps units and colour, and many current printers support it. See design for 3D printing.

## DWG and DXF: 2D drawings and profiles

DWG is the native file format of Autodesk AutoCAD and the most common format for 2D technical drawings, floor plans and site layouts in the UK. It holds layers, line types, dimensions and blocks. DXF was created by Autodesk as an exchange format and is read by almost all CAD and CAM software.

For cutting, DXF is the usual request. A laser cutter, plasma table, waterjet or CNC router follows the lines in the DXF as tool paths, so the file should contain only clean, closed outlines at 1:1 scale in millimetres, with no dimensions, title blocks or overlapping lines. Fabricators often ask for one DXF per part. See sheet metal and fabrication drawings.

## Converting between formats

- **Sketch or PDF to DWG**: redrawn to scale. See CAD conversion.
- **STEP to STL**: quick and reliable, with a chosen resolution.
- **STL to STEP**: possible as a mesh wrapped in STEP, but not a true solid. For manufacturing, remodel it.
- **3D model to 2D drawing**: standard views, sections and dimensions to BS 8888 conventions, exported as DWG and PDF.
- **DWG to DXF**: a simple export, but check scale, units and that outlines are closed.

When in doubt, ask your supplier which format and version they want. Some older machines need DXF saved as an older release.

## FAQs

### What file format do manufacturers want for 3D parts?

Most machine shops and injection moulders want a STEP file for the 3D geometry plus a dimensioned PDF drawing showing tolerances, material and finish. STEP keeps exact curves and opens in almost every professional CAD system. dijitul supplies both at £45 an hour + VAT.

### Can I send an STL file to a CNC machine shop?

Usually not. STL is a triangle mesh designed for 3D printing, without exact curves or units, so machinists struggle to program from it. Send a STEP file instead. If you only have an STL, the part may need remodelling as a proper solid.

### What is the difference between DWG and DXF?

DWG is AutoCAD's native format, used for editable technical drawings. DXF is an exchange format that almost any CAD or CAM software can read. For laser cutting and CNC profiling, fabricators usually ask for clean DXF outlines at 1:1 scale in millimetres.

### Can you convert my STL to STEP?

A direct conversion only wraps the mesh in a STEP file, which is not a true editable solid. For anything to be machined or edited, dijitul remodels the part properly from the STL as a reference, charged at £45 an hour + VAT or a fixed quote.

### What file do I need for 3D printing?

STL is accepted by almost every slicer and print bureau. 3MF is a newer format that keeps units and colour and is supported by many current printers. Export at a fine enough resolution that curves stay smooth, and confirm the units are millimetres.

### Which file does a laser cutter need?

Most laser cutters, plasma tables and waterjets want a DXF file with closed outlines, drawn at full size in millimetres, with no dimensions, text or overlapping lines unless the text is to be cut or engraved. Check if your fabricator wants one part per file.
