Sound familiar?

  • Your cards, letterheads and invoices were designed at different times and don't match.
  • You've rebranded but the old stationery is still going out.
  • Staff keep making their own invoice and quote templates.
  • You order print from three suppliers and the colours never match.
  • You need everything in one go for a new business launch.

Key facts

  • Business cards or letterhead design start from £75 + VAT; full sets are fixed-priced.
  • Items share one grid, typeface and colour set, so they match side by side.
  • Business cards at 85 × 55 mm, letterheads at A4, compliment slips at DL (99 × 210 mm).
  • Print artwork is supplied as CMYK PDF with 3 mm bleed where colour runs to the edge.
  • Word templates are included for anything staff type into.
  • Printing is not included in design prices but can be arranged and quoted.

What counts as business stationery today

Stationery used to mean a box of printed letterheads. Now it is a mix of printed items and digital templates that all have to look like the same business:

  • Printed: business cards, letterheads, compliment slips, envelopes, notecards, presentation folders, appointment cards, labels.
  • Digital: Word templates for letters, quotes and invoices, PDF letterheads for emailing, and an email signature.

dijitul media designs the set as one system. You choose which items you need now; the rest can be added later using the same layout.

Standard UK stationery sizes

ItemCommon UK size
Business card85 × 55 mm
LetterheadA4, 210 × 297 mm
Compliment slipDL, 99 × 210 mm (one third of A4)
DL envelope110 × 220 mm, takes A4 folded in thirds
C5 envelope162 × 229 mm, takes A4 folded once or A5 flat
C4 envelope229 × 324 mm, takes A4 unfolded
NotecardA6, 105 × 148 mm, or folded A5

Printed artwork that runs to the edge gets 3 mm bleed on every side and a safe zone for text. Envelope printing has its own limits, as many envelopes are overprinted after manufacture, so we check the printable area with the printer before designing.

How we keep a stationery set consistent

Consistency comes from decisions made once and reused:

  • One grid. Logo position, margins and footer placement are proportionally the same across items.
  • One colour specification. Each brand colour has a fixed CMYK value for print and a Pantone reference where spot colour is used, taken from your brand guidelines.
  • One type hierarchy. Names, titles and contact details use the same font sizes and weights on every item.
  • One source of company details. Your registered name, number and address are typed once and copied, so there are no differences between the card and the letter.

If all items are printed together on the same stock, colours match far better than when they're ordered from different suppliers at different times. We can arrange print and quote the full set.

Templates staff actually use

Printed stationery is only half the job. Most documents now leave the office as PDFs typed in Word or exported from accounts software. We create Word templates with the logo and footer locked into the header, defined text styles and safe margins. For invoices from software such as Xero or QuickBooks, we can supply a logo file sized for their invoice templates. A good template also sets the paper size to A4 rather than US Letter, which Word sometimes defaults to, so PDFs print correctly in the UK without shrinking or cropping. Template work is quoted or charged at £45 an hour + VAT.

Printed or digital: what's still worth printing

Many small businesses now print far less than they used to. Business cards are still widely used at meetings, events and on trade counters. Printed letterheads matter less if most letters are emailed as PDFs, in which case a well-made Word template and a digital PDF letterhead may be all you need, with a small print run for formal documents. Compliment slips remain useful if you post samples, brochures or documents. Printed envelopes are worth it for regular mailings and invoices sent by post.

We'll help you decide what's worth printing and in what quantity, so you're not left with boxes of stationery carrying an old phone number. Printing can be arranged and quoted alongside the design.
