Design for Oxford businesses
Oxford's economy grows out of its universities. The University of Oxford, its colleges and Oxford Brookes University are major employers, and the city has one of the UK's most active spin-out scenes, with companies in life sciences, quantum computing, AI, energy and engineering at Oxford Science Park, Begbroke and across the county at Harwell and Milton Park.
Spin-outs moving from grant funding to investment need to look credible quickly. That usually means a brand identity that does not look like a university department, a pitch deck, scientific diagrams redrawn cleanly as vector artwork, and 3D renders of a device or instrument that does not physically exist yet. Medical device and engineering firms may also need CAD models exported as STEP, technical drawings for prototype suppliers and figures prepared for journals or grant applications at the right resolution.
Publishing has deep roots here. Oxford University Press is based in the city, along with many smaller publishers, education businesses and research charities. Their design needs include book covers, report layouts, typesetting in InDesign, accessible PDFs and infographics.
Colleges and conference venues need event brochures, room hire guides, signage and photography. Tourism, built around the colleges, the Bodleian Library and the Ashmolean, supports hotels, restaurants, tour operators and language schools that need menus, leaflets and maps. The MINI plant at Cowley keeps a manufacturing supply chain in the area too.
